- Are the students required to wear uniforms? Students in kindergarten through grade eight are required to wear a uniform supplied by Lands End that is neat, casual, and comfortable. Students in preschool (3 and 4 year olds) are not required to wear a uniform.
- Do you have a lunch program? The answer to this question is yes and no. Astoria Lutheran School does not cook food on premises. Pre-school students have a catered lunch and snacks provided as part of their program. Students in the PreK-3 and K-8 classes may bring their own lunch.
- Does Astoria Lutheran School have an After School Program? Our After School Program runs daily from 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM. It is staffed by teachers and teaching assistants from our school as well as individuals who have been hired specifically for the program. There is a separate program for preschool and grade school students. Each program has a set schedule which includes quiet activities, play, games, and snack time. Also, there is a prescribed “homework time” staffed by certified teachers, for the grade school students.
- Do you offer musical instrument instruction? Piano and voice is available on Wednesday’s after school. Please contact the school for fee information
- What is taught in religion class? Students in Pre-K3, Kindergarten, and Grades 1-8 read and discuss Bible stories and how faith is expressed in our daily lives. Also, these classes attend a weekly Chapel service. There is no religion instruction of any kind in the 3-K and PreK-4 classes operated under the direction of the New York City Department of Education.
- How far away do I have to live in order to get district busing? Can I choose pick-up and drop-off stops? New York City’s Office of Pupil Transportation provides busing within a 5 miles radius of the school for students in Kindergarten through Grade 6. Parents must make arrangements for transportation via the school office. Bus stops are assigned by the NYC’s Office of Pupil Transportation. Eligible students in grades 7and 8 receive student passes for use on public transportation.
Why Uniforms?
Wearing a uniform is easier than picking the latest fashion (for students and for parents!)—but it’s about so much more. Uniforms even the playing field and let kids focus on learning (instead of who has more, who has better, or what the latest fashion is). They can focus on who they authentically are instead of what they look like.
